…Anton Newcombe…
« Let’s go fucking mental »
The Brian Jonestown Massacre
It sounds like rock’s history has been crushed by contemporary History. History, like stories are needless beacons contributing to build the illusion of a linear time, an instantaneous establishment of souvenir’s hierarchy... What needs to remain important... what needs to be related, cried, glorified… what needs to last… Individual memory, collective memory have to select randomly some scatterbrained instants, have to clot them in a defined time. Souvenirs fill the past with comforting totems occupying the future’s void.
Anton Newcombe founded his band The Brian Jonestown Massacre on the blistering ashes of an absurd decade ; the 80’s… the world’s excessive bipolarity, consumerism’s madness mix with a new idea of rebellion, with different loopholes. People start to realize… neoliberalism is even bigger rubbish than the war on drugs, science and breakthrough are more dangerous blind faiths than monotheisms, hedonism is really the dictatorship Huxley tried to warn us about. What kind of selection will be proceeded by Anton Newcombe’s memory through this barely consumed past, through these previous decades ? The death of an idol and of some innocents, the interconnected oscillation between individual chaos and collective worldwide psycho-delirium… some forgotten sounds, others generated by a self-imposed modification of reality’s appearance.
Anton Newcombe is a post 80’s hippie… The Brian Jonestown Massacre represents his materialized utopia.
Theater : because stage is the place where « I and the other » mutate in multiple becomings…
Hashischins (Club of) : within the floating delirium of these superimposed sounds, absinth’s and hashish’s thick fragrances seem to surround The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s music, revealing that way their secrets to the tortured, wasted and melancholic souls…
Eternal : because hashishin’s theater is an eternity of maybe…
Babylon (Panic in) : because a song title has never been so close to the music it evokes… because something buried so deeply into history has never been so close to the present…
Rock : because Anton Newcombe is one of the last Rock n Roll Animals…
Ionic : chemistry and the origin of the world… the chemical origin of the world…
Anton : Newcombe
Newcombe : Anton
Joel (Gilion) : an argentinian writer wrote that « « Visions of Johanna » is in Bob Dyaln’s career his black hole… » Tambourin is Brian Jonestown Massacre’s black hole… where everything emanates from… where everything disappears… where everything builds, modifies, dismantles and evaporates itself…
Opiate : some forgotten sounds, others generated by a self-imposed modification of reality’s appearance.
Nonchalance : because ataraxia is the ideal of wisdom… a necessary slowness
Entropy : what we create… what is left…
Super-sonic : the first song that swallowed me into this psychotropic twister…
Totem : reassuring beacons to fill the future’s void…
Oblivion : illusions sways on the past’s ocean…
West : a preposterous quest, a lost ideal, a neons filled desert…
Nothingness : like an instant of amnesia imitating nothingness…
Mantra : the guitar sound, the tambourin, the vocal resonance…The Brian Jonestown Massacre’s music is a vibrating mantra ripping reality off the body.
Ayahuasca : there is something Mexican in this music….
Silence : because it’s the opposite double of music, its compulsory fuel, it’s anti-material…. The empty space where all emanates from…
Soft (Machine) : a musico-psychadelic cut-up… a mystic, ethereal up-cut…
America : …« An Air-conditioned nightmare »….
Catharsis : because art is only another way to escape out of hell…
Roll : because Anton Newcombe is one of the last Rock n Roll Animals…
Exhale : as if we were watching the thick warmness of some blue smoke… dancing in silence… drawing magical circles around people, things and into space…
