Transgressive Cultures Conference

TRANSGRESSIVE CULTURES CONFERENCE
The University Of Chicago Center in Paris
6, rue Thomas Mann
9, 10 november 2017

We are really happy to be part of the TRANSGRESSIVE CULTURES CONFERENCES, organized by Jack Sargeant, Nicole Malik and Sébastien Greppo... 2 days of conferences, performances etc... !!

NO(W)-BODY

Dejan Gacond - Kit Brown - Tenko

The artist Kit Brown, the musician Tenko, and the writer Dejan Gacond will present « NO(W)-BODY » a special performative-conference-installation building a bouncing dialogue between images and sound... A bouncing dialogue based on Lydia Lunch and Antonin Artaud’s works. A dialogue between an opposite and similar reflection  « From the body, for the body, with the body, through the body, still the body and until the body »... about the body as an instrument of revolt, about art as an instrument of rebellion, about the need to scream and about the deconstruction of a structured langage…
Our installation will materialize and resorb itself during the conference-performance. A possible world appearing and disappearing. A fragile balance between nothingness and accumulation where nothingness can be the accumulation or the other way around. This ephemeral reality will crawl out of the void and get back to its empty form during their performance mixing spoken word and dark wave.

LYDIA LUNCH RETROVIRUS
WEASEL WALTER BOB BERT TIM DAHL

LYDIA LUNCH RETROVIRUS : « AN ALL-STAR CAST OF SONIC BRUTARIANS » rassemblés pour un panorama sauvage de la production musicale de Lydia Lunch depuis 1977 jusqu’à nos jours. Avec des morceaux de Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, 8 Eyed Spy, Queen of Siam, 1313 and Shotgun Wedding.

The Arctopus, Burmese and Lake Of Dracula.

Il vit à New York.

A KALEIDOSCOPE OF NOTHINGNESS

"We've never played at the wonderfully named and famous Bikini Test before. It's in La Chaux de Fonds in the Jura mountains a town with an unusually high percentage of artistically minded people. It is also the home of A kaleidoscope of nothingness a group of artists and musicians who are collaborating with us on all 3 Swiss concerts. They will be turning the stages into large installations within which they and then And also the trees will perform. The installations will represent a bridge between their world and ours paying homage to our respective and common influences. This will be a new experience."

LA TROISIÈME VÉRITÉ

La Plage des Six Pompes
La Chaux-de-Fonds

(graphisme : Mathilde Vaucher)

In the beginning it was the sound

In the beginning it was the sound…

(pic by Medhi Benkler, Kilbi 2017)

par Dejan Gacond

The thick smoke of incense is undulating smoothly under the B-Stage, slowly filling the whole space. On stage some smoke machines are reinforcing this atmosphere. A voice from beyond the grave recites gently some sentences over a heavy drone reminding some Buddhist mantras. Time dismantles. Little by little we connect ourselves to a low pace meditative vibratory flow. Dominik Kesseli and his long dreadlocks drummer cross through the dense smoke, install themselves on stage and start a first song. The image is gripping ! Dominik could be a blend of a catholic monk, a yogi master, a 70’s guru and a beatnik. He seems to embody all these characters… together and separately. He’s all of them and none of them at the same time. « I’m trying to retranscribe the landscape of my mind » as Dominik was telling me a few hours before his concert with his eyes scanning the agricultural stretch behind the Bad Bonn. It was a lot about images in our talk. « Some images I want to write… » said Dominik. The images of words… the word ; « image »…

I’ve read somewhere that David Byrne from Talking Heads realized that he has been unconsciously influenced by the evangelist sermons on the radio, by the voice’s flow of these sermons. A rhythm, a pulsation that he used to modify his way of singing. Dominik told me that he’s consciously influenced by religious music. The choirs as much as the transmission of a speech, the organ as much as the spatial ritualisation of the service. He was born and raised in a Reformed catholic family and religion contributed to outline his connection with the world and its reality. Religion is in his DNA ! However he militates for an open minded relation with others and with the world. He militates against all form of radicalism. He dreams about a world without fear, hatred or intolerance. This world ; his world reveals itself in the interval of a concert. He offers it to be shared, without imposing anything… the transcendence that could spurt out of Dominik’s image become immanence… if the experience contains something mystical, we are floating in a benevolent polytheism and not in a threatening monotheism…

« I hope the audience get to reach other planets… i hope they can travel in another dimension… » A quest to uncover the original pulsion of music, its primary necessity as much as the energy music generates. To untie oneself from dogmas as much as from the visible world’s weight, its ineluctable severity, its demeaning structures, its restricting dualities. There is something nietzschean about Dominik Kesseli. Like the wandering philosopher he attempts to go with his music beyond good and evil… In Nietzsche’s work there is also this idea of movement, sound and dance in the aim of grasping a different reality that the experimented one… When I asked Dominik what is the destination of his musical journey, he marks a pause, leaves the silence feeding his thought and says… « laugh »… One of the most beautiful book of Nietzsche is named « The Gay Science »

When time escapes from its fluid linearity, it embodies itself in a pure, crystal conscience of the instant… « The best would be if the audience loose the time… » says Dominik. So that now becomes eternal, we have to forget here. Music remains the best way to reach this feeling of now… a romance with infinity, a ballad in the incomplete, a roaming in the void… music is an eternity of maybe… a sensation sent from space to escape the time… as it is de-realizing the real, music makes reality truer than its appearance… As the long songs from Lord Kesseli and The Drums go by we are floating on huge quiet rivers as much as speeding down small mountain streams. We discover an unknown constellation of landscapes, we experiment a mystic kaleidoscope, the soil’s consciousness diminishes in aid of the sound’s consciousness… A Lord Kesseli and The Drums concert is a fragile instant hanged between the divine and the diabolical… Definitely a sentence coming up into my mind every time I am in the land of Fribourg… like if the conscious of here  was coming back to reality… A concert of Lord Kesseli and The Drums reconnect with some spiritualities nestled into history’s recklessness… Lord Kesseli offers us to see a world where we can believe in the sound, in its pulsation, in its beginning, in its energy… A floating ecstasy… a blurred wandering… the becoming music of sound…
« Music is….deep….really. »
Dominik Kesseli

"The weirder the better " - english version

« The weirder the better »
James Sedwards

(pic by Mehdi Benkler / James Sedwards with This is not This Heat @ Bad Bonn Kilbi)

par Dejan Gacond

The insectoid mutations of William S. Burroughs. His world dwelt by bizarre creatures, post-sub-conscious journeys, hallucinatory trips, and his cut-up technic deeply influenced James Sedwards. He’s the first writer coming in James’s mind when i asked him what he thinks about literature, then he added ; « the weirder the better. » Burrroughs or the profound consciousness of layers. A surveyor of the entangled infra-world’s stratums. Burroughs’s books sound like complicated noise tracks, like superimposed lines of guitar, like incessant rhythmic cut-up. Through his different musical projects James Sedwards is building a kind of sonic extension to the work of the mythic writer. From his collaboration with Thurston Moore to an improvised performance with Lydia Lunch, Weasel Walter and François Cambuzat going to his band Nought, James explores the sonorous limits of consciousness and of its wandering double. According to him, sound and noise can’t be differentiated ; « It’s all sound or It’s all noise… It’s just how it’s organized. » It doesn’t matter if he plays noise music, guitar or bass like on one song the other day at Bad Bonn Kilbi with This Is Not This Heat. Sensation remain essential, the energy too. He refuses to be associated with categories, to be put in a box. Slayer or John Zorn, Lydia Lunch or Pink Floyd… music has to be considered as a delirium of senses… and not as impermeable categories shriveled up on themselves. A pop song can awaken in a body some sensations equally intense as the one produced by a devastating wall of sound.

Being open to the others and keeping a pronounced taste for experimentation…. James Sedwards has been a session musician for a long time and his natural capacity to work for other people’s music can be felt in his deeply human personality as much as in his attitude on stage. He seems permanently attentive at the harmonious totality formed by a band, this subtle balance of connexions, looks, reciprocity with each one. Music can be envisaged as an improvisation « free of any kind of construction » or as a « completely composed » ensemble such as the complicated structures of This Is Not This Heat, « It’s all part of the same langage » explains James. His kindness and some timidity emanates from him when we talk, maybe a way to protect himself or his talent. Instinct and technic skills have rarely coagulated with so much fluidity than in his way of playing music. From the man and from the sounds and noises he produces with his instruments spurts out a kind of simplicity. « I’ve met Thurston Moore in my kitchen… we drank a cup of tea. » he explains in the shade of the trees behind the Bad Bonn. Thurston Moore just moved in London and they were living in collocation with James during a year. A few months later they decided to play music together. They worked as a duo during six months before being joined by Steve Shelley and by Debbie Googe following James’s proposition. The recording of « The Best Day » was already planned. Steve and Debbie had just a few days to learn the songs. « The first time we played music all together was the first day of recording. We recorded the album in three days… » Through this process, without really noticing it, they became a band, a tribe, a small community. James Sedwards says that besides bringing to the sound a deeper density, Debbie Googe is also « a real social glue. » The natural faculty of My Bloody Valentine bass player to gather people contributed to transform this ephemeral project into a real band who just recorded a masterpiece named « Rock n Roll Consciousness ». A complete, harmonious, dense and powerful record. A music piece touching totally as much as the infinitesimal. An album as much intellectual as instinctive, as much rock n roll as conscious.

While James explains me the trajectory of his collaboration with Thurston, it’s hard for me not to project myself two years ago. Almost the exact same day, in the shade of the same millenary trees surrounding the Bad Bonn. From this place emanates a particular energy. It was boiling that day of june 2015. I was abundantly sweating… it was with feverishness I started to talk with Thurston Moore who was about to play a few hours later with his band. A surreal instant. Indescribable. I was stammering and words were juxtaposing in a weird way. I remember my shacking hands when Thurston asked me to sign him the little kaleidoscope of nothingness fanzine i just gave him… A few meters away, Debbie Googe, James Sedwards and Steve Shelley were having a drink…

« Noise never ends » says James suddenly bringing me back in 2017… He talks about his band Nought, « it’s been there forever… it’s my first project and i guess it’ll be my last as well… » Right now, Nought are finishing to write « a challenging piece of music ». James needs to find a balance between his different projects, satisfying at the same time his refusal to belong to some defined category of musician. He needs to remain open to the evanescent fury of instinct as much as to the peaceful reflexion of the mind. A few meters away from us, some midges are forming a constantly moving swarm. A molecule boiling with atoms… It looks like a book written by William S. Burroughs… We wonder a little while about this phenomenon… it looks like a telluric knot suspended in the air.. can you believe this ? Thinking about it, music is a thin blend between the air and the soil. James embodies this oscillation. A journey through the geological layers of unconsciousness, a cosmos explosion, an idea of emptiness, a delirium of senses… music is a fuel… something to share… an oscilaltion… a romance with infinity… the music of James is the amplification of a William Burroughs’s book…
